Newark, Del. — At the Bob Carpenter Center on July 19, families gathered for the State of Delaware’s Fan Festival and Final Watch Party. Hosted by the Delaware Tourism Office, the community event in Newark concluded FIFA World Cup related festivities in the state. Hundreds of people wore a rainbow of team uniforms and merchandise representing colors of the various countries that participated in the 2026 North American tournament. The football fans viewed a broadcast of Argentina vs Spain played on giant LED scoreboards hanging over the Blue Hens basketball court.
Tabitha Lucas and her daughter wore the famous canary kits of Brazil’s Neymar Jr. as they lined up to enter the Bob Carpenter Center to watch the 3pm match. Their group traveled from Cambridge, Maryland to attend the event. Lucas told the Call that she had decided on watching the final matchup in Newark due to the location’s “convenience.” The event provided an “affordable” option for her friends and family to watch together, she said.
Middletown resident Faizal Chaudhury similarly told the Call about finding it accessible to attend more than one public FIFA World Cup Watch Party in Delaware. His family wore Team USA merchandise as they perused the activities available at the Fan Festival outside, including food trucks, dance contests, and soccer-themed carnival games.
Delaware Tourism Office Director Jessica Welch spoke to the Call at the event about the positive attention and financial benefits Delaware is believed to have received due to its proximity to FIFA host stadiums on the East coast. While the final numbers of the 2026 World Cup’s financial impact within the state’s borders were not calculated yet, she did cite a City of Philadelphia estimate that the tournament would bring approximately $770 million dollars to the region. Welch shared that it was previously internally estimated that Côte d’Ivoire’s home-base stay at Hotel Dupont in Wilmington would bring in at least $7 million alone.
Welch was optimistic about a potential statewide economic boost since the World Cup started in June. Welch spoke about “anecdotal reports” of increased beach traffic, hotel bookings, and attendance at tourist attractions such as museums. She said that hotels as far north as Route 202 in Wilmington and as far south as Rehoboth Beach reported Football club members booking in large groups to attend the mid-Atlantic matches, traveling from places as far as France, Ecuador, and Ghana.
The July 19 Fan Festival and Final Watch Party bookended the state’s official FIFA events along with a Wilmington Welcome Rally held for Les Elephants on June 6.
Spain scored the Final game’s only goal during extra time, winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup against the defending champions from Argentina.
